Youth Programs

Youth on Outside Stairs

The Volunteer Center is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of lifelong volunteers and community leaders by providing meaningful opportunities of service to school-age youth (ages 5-17). Each of our Youth Programs focuses on empowering South Bay youth to make positive social change through active citizenship and service-learning.

As defined by the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.

The Volunteer Center Youth Programs provide opportunities for youth to face the challenges of the community and take initiative in addressing them through creative service projects and events.

From July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010, over 840 volunteers contributed 9,100 hours of service to The Volunteer Center’s Youth Programs. In addition, over 2,000 volunteers were connected with nonprofit organizations that have youth-friendly service opportunities.
