National Days of Service
The Volunteer Center is committed to supporting nationwide efforts that promote service, charity and compassion by observing the following National Days of Service:
- Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service – January
Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”
- Global Youth Service Day – April
Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world – and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth – and is celebrated each year in over 100 countries. Each year, millions of children and youth around the world work together with schools, youth organizations, nonprofits, community and faith-based organizations, volunteer and national service programs, government agencies, faith communities, and other individuals to address the world’s most critical issues and change their communities on Global Youth Service Day.
- 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance – September
The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance was established to honor the memories of those who perished on 9/11 and to renew the spirit of service that encapsulated the national community after the attacks. On this day, people across the country voluntarily support charitable causes, perform good deeds and engage in other service activities in observance of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
- Make a Difference Day – October
Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others — a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate in this annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. Make A Difference Day is the largest day of community service in the nation, rallying corporations, government leaders, charitable organizations and everyday Americans into action on one day. Each year, 3 million people participate worldwide, helping millions more.
Through the Youth Programs, The Volunteer Center honors these National Days of Service by identifying a need in the community, organizing a region-wide event to address this need, and recruiting volunteers – young and old alike – so that everyone can support the cause!
