Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January)
Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

On January 14, 2012, the Volunteer Center Youth Coalition (VCYC) collaborated with Peace4Kids to host a “Seeing Our Future” event at Loyola Marymount University for their peers in foster care. The event was in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. K’Lynn Mitchell, junior at North High School and member of the MLK event committee, reflects, “Our main goal for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is to show the foster youth that there are opportunities that can be achieved and that they can be successful in whatever they choose to accomplish in life.”
Youth volunteers from over 25 South Bay schools came together on this day to make a difference in the lives of these foster youth. The event included youth-led workshops about taking the SAT, a college fair, and games with prizes. Professionals from several industries also spoke to the youth about their jobs and educational paths. Special guest Laila Ali, daughter of professional boxer Muhammad Ali, was a keynote speaker. Almost 250 volunteers contributed 1,200 hours of service to bring this special day to the foster youth.
