Hearts at Work

The Volunteer Center honors highly selected individuals who represent the best of corporate volunteerism with the “Hearts At Work” awards. The recipients are announced and feted at the annual Corporate Volunteer Awards Banquet.

2012 Honoree

Sharon Ryan

Sharon Ryan, Volunteer Extraordinaire


Sharon Ryan exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism through numerous community activities while managing her own travel agency, An Uncommon Journey. Sharon founded the Affinity Group to help support the Volunteer Center’s Operation Teddy Bear program, has served on boards that include the Volunteer Center, H.E.L.P., Palos Verdes Chamber of Commerce, PV Rotary Club and is founding member of the Palos Verdes Art Center. Several awards Sharon has received include the Affinity Group’s ‘Legends in our Time’, Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, ‘Citizen of the Year’ and Soroptimist, ‘Woman of Distinction’.

Hearts at Work: Ed Beall and Barbara Burget


Barbara Burgett, Public and Government Affairs Advisor for Exxon Mobil at the Torrance Refinery, manages contributions and community outreach programs.  Due to her efforts, Barbara has led the refinery volunteer team to serve over 4,000 hours at local nonprofits.  Barbara’s involvement with the Volunteer Center has been extensive including serving on the Board of Directors and serving as President of the Corporate Volunteer Council.  Barbara is always ready to help out any way she can!

 
Ed Beall, owner of Edward Carson Beall A.I.A. & Associates, has been instrumental in the growth of the Volunteer Center through the several terms he has served on the Board of Directors and is involved with many other community nonprofit organizations such as the Palos Verdes Art Center, Friends of Banning Museum, Assistance League of San Pedro & South Bay, and Concours d’Elegance. Most recently, he founded the Volunteer Center’s ‘Art To Go‘, a volunteer-run program that brings art projects to Title One elementary school children.
