Global Youth Service Day (April)
Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world – and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth – and is celebrated each year in over 100 countries. Each year, millions of children and youth around the world work together with schools, youth organizations, nonprofits, community and faith-based organizations, volunteer and national service programs, government agencies, faith communities, and other individuals to address the world’s most critical issues and change their communities on Global Youth Service Day.
Every year, more than 1.3 million youth under the age of 18 run away from homes filled with violence, narcotics, and emotional and physical abuse. As these homeless teens wander the streets, they endure severely poor hygienic conditions due to their lack of means to stay clean. As the challenge to meet basic needs becomes more difficult, the possibility of getting back to a normal life fades away. To address this problem, the Volunteer Center Youth Coalition (VCYC) is planning Packed With Hope for its 2012 Global Youth Service Day project.
Through the Packed With Hope project, VCYC members will make care packages for the homeless teens that turn to Covenant House in Los Angeles and the Runaway Homeless Youth Shelter in Hermosa Beach. Each care package will contain basic toiletries, clothes, food, and other helpful items to counteract the poor conditions a homeless teen must undergo. The VCYC’s goal is to provide 200 homeless teens with care packages.
To generate funding for the package materials, the VCYC is hosting a live entertainment showcase on Saturday, April 21, 6:00-8:30 p.m. American Martyrs in Manhattan Beach has generously provided their hall for the event’s location. The showcase will include bands, singers and dancers from South Bay high schools. Admission to the event is $5 pre-sale and $7 at the door.

Global Youth Service Day 2011
For GYSD 2011, the Volunteer Center Youth Coalition held a “Hooked On Books” Literacy Fair at the Meyler Adult and Family Learning Center in Torrance. The day was filled with activities inspired by books such as “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” and the Harry Potter series, plus food and prizes. Teen volunteers helped work one on one with participating families, staff the booked-themed activity booths and dress up as popular book characters.
