9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance (September)
As representatives of the Volunteer Center Youth Coalition, teens are given the opportunity to collaborate with other high school students in identifying the needs of the community.
On September 11, 2001, we became a unified nation that grew to recognize the growing needs of the people such as hunger. In tribute to all of those who were lost and the tens of thousands who rose in service, the VCYC dedicated themselves to feeding 9 hungry families for 11 weeks.
9/11 Committee Chairs Danielle and Tina worked with Dr. Teresa Lanphere, principal of Howard Wood Elementary School in Torrance, to identify chronically hungry students and families. For 11 weeks, VCYC members organized food drives and fundraisers to provide 3 bags of food for each of the 9 families. Please see the Torrance Unified School District Thank you Letter
